Camille Thurman
Fluid and powerful on the tenor saxophone and highly inventive as a vocalist, she also plays bass clarinet, flute, and piccolo. Her rich sax sound has been compared to Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon, while her vocal approach—including an impressive scatting ability—has been classified alongside those of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter.
The New York City native has already amassed several distinctive honors for her musicianship: runner up in the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, two-time winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award and a winner of the Fulbright Scholars Cultural Ambassador Grant, The Chamber Music of America Performance Plus Grant (Sponsored by the Dorris Duke Charitable Foundation) and the Jazz Coalition Composers Grant among others. Gabrielle Cavassa is an American vocalist-composer of Italian descent who is garnering attention for her distinctive voice and intimate expression. She was crowned a winner of the International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition in 2021 after the independent release of her critically acclaimed debut album. Cavassa is featured on celebrated saxophonist Joshua Redman’s inaugural album with Blue Note Records, ‘where are we’, released September 2023.
Cavassa’s relationship with music began with an early love for records. She remembers “obsessively listening” to albums at an early age and later amassed a record collection through which she began her education in music. Born and raised in Escondido, California, Cavassa moved to San Francisco to attend San Francisco State University in 2012. There, she began her career as a vocalist , crediting the Bay Area music scene as having a significant influence on her development. In 2017, Cavassa moved to New Orleans where she would work alongside and become inspired by the city’s most influential voices.
Shimmering in her own humanness, Cavassa’s expression contains a vulnerability that reaches at the crux of our humanity. Her songwriting and interpretation explore moods of sensuality, melancholy, and humor, as though she is reading from a diary.

St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Portland was looking to replace a spinet used in worship services. After a brief search, the piano committee visited Classic Pianos. Fred Riley greeted us warmly, questioned us about the needs of our … More church, and led us on a tour of the facilities, bottom to top. We played our way up! Fred knew the pros and cons of each instrument. After several hours, Fred directed us to two pianos, of which the Knabe Concert Grand stood out.
