Camille Thurman
Fluid and powerful on the tenor saxophone and highly inventive as a vocalist, she also plays bass clarinet, flute, and piccolo. Her rich sax sound has been compared to Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon, while her vocal approach—including an impressive scatting ability—has been classified alongside those of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter.
The New York City native has already amassed several distinctive honors for her musicianship: runner up in the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, two-time winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award and a winner of the Fulbright Scholars Cultural Ambassador Grant, The Chamber Music of America Performance Plus Grant (Sponsored by the Dorris Duke Charitable Foundation) and the Jazz Coalition Composers Grant among others. Gabrielle Cavassa is an American vocalist-composer of Italian descent who is garnering attention for her distinctive voice and intimate expression. She was crowned a winner of the International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition in 2021 after the independent release of her critically acclaimed debut album. Cavassa is featured on celebrated saxophonist Joshua Redman’s inaugural album with Blue Note Records, ‘where are we’, released September 2023.
Cavassa’s relationship with music began with an early love for records. She remembers “obsessively listening” to albums at an early age and later amassed a record collection through which she began her education in music. Born and raised in Escondido, California, Cavassa moved to San Francisco to attend San Francisco State University in 2012. There, she began her career as a vocalist , crediting the Bay Area music scene as having a significant influence on her development. In 2017, Cavassa moved to New Orleans where she would work alongside and become inspired by the city’s most influential voices.
Shimmering in her own humanness, Cavassa’s expression contains a vulnerability that reaches at the crux of our humanity. Her songwriting and interpretation explore moods of sensuality, melancholy, and humor, as though she is reading from a diary.

I recently purchased a Schimmel piano from Classic Pianos, with help from Fred Riley and Jaden, and I couldn’t be happier with my experience. From the moment I walked in, Fred and Jaden were incredibly attentive and professional. They took … More the time to understand my budget and playing style, guiding me through a diverse selection of pianos that fit my needs perfectly. What truly stood out was their respectful approach: they gave me the space and time I needed to truly explore each piano without hovering. This thoughtful approach allowed me to connect with the instruments on a deeper level and ultimately find the perfect piano that genuinely inspires me to play. Moreover, their dedication to supporting local piano community is commendable. It’s clear that Classic Pianos is committed to quality and community, which only added to the overall positive experience. If you’re in the market for a piano, I highly recommend Classic Pianos. Recently, I traded in my Yamaha grand for a Yamaha Disklavier. This is my fifth piano from Classic, starting with an upright. I absolutely love their 100% value lifetime trade-up policy and their abundant inventory, which always meets my … More changing needs. Fred and Taylor are professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. Fred recommended the most suitable piano for me and even provided a complimentary tuning. I later learned that Classic sells pianos all over the United States. If you're looking for a piano, this is a family business that will not disappoint.
