In 1886, just 33 short years after the founding of their company, Steinway’s name had become world-famous. Much of that fame resulted from their pianos’ unusual high quality at the time, like this beautiful Victorian upright. During the 1880s and 1890s, seven out of ten public school students were being taught to read music, and over a half million were taking piano lessons, which made pianos like this in high demand. It was handmade in New York when the Steinway family oversaw every aspect of manufacturing. It has been refurbished and has the American sound for which Steinways of this era are famous. We have made price concessions to reflect some furniture blemishes on the piano. Our technicians have regulated, voiced, and tuned this instrument to optimize its playability and musicality.
